Equivalence reading

Minor White reading was on equivalence in terms of photography. I personally didn't really enjoy the reading especially after watching the video on Francesca Woodman. I liked how in the reading talked about the photographer who took pictures for years of just clouds and how he thought they reminded him of his girlfriend. I got from reading that that people make associations with each others artworks that may be completely separate from the artists intent. He may be taking pictures of clouds because they remind him of his girlfriend but to someone else they can make the association that it reminds them of playing outside as a child. I also found it interesting that he talked about how we all see us within each others works. I guess I subconsciously like to find something that relates to my life in all the pieces of work I look at, it makes it easy to relate to, and if I don't find something I can relate to I'm either turned off to the work or I'm super intrigued.

Pictures that inspire me.

In class we talked about a picture we have taken that has changed the way we view or feel about photography.

For my own personal work that has changed me was actually a picture in the series I did for my final last fall on my family. I've always enjoyed taking pictures of people and my friends, but I never turned the camera on myself or my family. I think I was at a point where I was I was frustrated with my work and I was caught in making art for everyone else and not myself. Part of that is I honestly had no idea who I was as an artist. I didn't know the ideas I wanted to share and I didn't have a clear view yet. In many ways I feel I'm still working towards finding myself and learn about being vulnerable through my art. This picture no only has lots of personal meaning for me, but I think it's still relatable for viewers. This is also one of the only photos that made my parents realize I have talent and started to take my work more serious. 

I can't remember ever seeing a specific seeing a photo and saying to myself I want to do that. My parents aren't very artistic but they always had a video camera or old school camera out growing up. I remember looking through books with my grandmother (where I got my artistic ability) and stopping on her watercolors she had made. She was a seamstress so she would water color outfits and fabric swatches. However my photographic interest came from National Geographic. My grandfather had a subscription and about drop them off for us kids to look through and use for school projects. More recent national geographic photographers I like are Larry Towell and Jonas Bendiksen. These books and images made me dream of the world outside my town. I've never traveled far in life so far but as a kid these made me want to travel and explore and see what else the world had to offer.

anyone out there?

I don't know if anyone actually looks at this thing outside of school time but I'm working at a beautiful farm this summer and its too nice not to show anyone. I've been working in film all summer so I haven't developed any film yet but I have some kinda descent photos on my phone.
